My Work Experience
Committee Chairperson
of the 2022 African Leadership Academy Model African Union (ALAMAU)
As the Committee Chairperson of the Specialised Technical Committee of Education (STCE), I was in charge of a three-person dias and 25 delegates.
ALAMAU focuses on the diplomatic qualities of decision deliberation, enabling me to reach common ground between the parties involved. ALAMAU honed my articulation, collaboration and diplomatic skills.
Further, I was a member of the
ALAMAU 2021 - 2022 Research Class.
For 1.5 years, I worked and wrote on the underdevelopment, and future restitution, of sub-Saharan African public education.
This background in research and diplomacy gives me the skills to analyse a problem and identify and rectify the critical causes, not just treat the symptoms.
Through the Research Class and the March 2022 Conference, I gained the skills of autodidacticism, accountability and responsibility for a group of people.
Here is the Final Study Guide for the 2022 STCE, drafted, written and typed by me.
Co-Head Marketer
of the 2022 AMAKA Business Cohort
Instagram (@Afrikamaka)
AMAKA produces hand-made, natural-based hair and skin care products to combat endometriosis.
Here, I planned multiple-dimensioned photoshoots to sell the brand's mission. I deliberated meetings with stakeholders and ensured production was as efficient as possible for sales and the press.
Hence, I am coordinated and organised and can be held accountable for a team. Time management is natural for me.
creativity in governance
With my experience in AMAKA, I learnt how to approach a problem from different perspectives. I learnt that there are several solutions to a problem.
Through my photography, as shown above, there were messages AMAKA decided to relay for its brand. My job was to depict them.
This is no different from governance and other fields. From AMAKA, I know how to produce various solutions for a cause.
Therefore, I am open-minded to others' opinions on topics discussed; and I always have an alternative plan if needed. I am prepared, collaborative and proactive.
marketing in governance
Through AMAKA and marketing, I know what sells or does not sell to a demographic.
In context, I can identify the future pros and cons of policies on a people and whether or not it applies to the situation.
From analysing people's responses to specific word choices, images, photos etc., I can make policy ideas more understandable for the parties involved so they can reach a consensus.
Therefore, I understand my audience and do not deter the population away big decisions by using political jargon.
Bronze and Silver Awardee
of the Duke of Edinburgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh Award is a multi-faceted award that requires one to harness a skill, participate in physical activity, and volunteer in an organisation of choice.
I used this opportunity to better the lives of others; I raised money for a hospital, organised a school play, and used my poetry to help alter a dangerous narrative.
Duke of Edinburgh taught me to be a proactive, dedicated and resourceful leader, as seen below.
Authoritative Leadership
Organising and participating in these activities helped me identify my leadership style:
Authoritative Leadership.
Authoritative Leaders focus on inspiring those around them towards a common goal.
It requires the leader to bolster the strengths of their colleagues and compensate for their weaknesses.
As they provide overall direction, they also provide guidance, feedback and motivation to their teams. This promotes a sense of accomplishment or achievement.
The authoritative leadership style relies heavily on getting to know each member of a team. This allows a leader to provide guidance and feedback on a more personalized level, helping individuals to succeed.

In context, my leadership style relies heavily on feedback from peers and the general population. Hence, more effective policies are produced and implemented to meet current demands.
This furthers the narrative of accountability in the government department.

The Period Poem was written for the Women and Girls Charity on Period Poverty in South East Asia.
For this, I had to understand a reality I had not lived and empathise with people I had not met.
Understanding the differing perspectives of colleagues and the general population is essential to good governance.
This is again relevant in diplomacy - empathy. I firmly believe that diplomacy and governance would better benefit the people if policymakers had a larger sense of empathy.
She is not ashamed of her maturity
That comes once a month
She is going to break the system
And steal her rights back
It may take a day, a week or a month
But at least she started the fight
And so, she doesn’t go back to her room
She is no longer filled with gloom
But with strength, courage and fire
She finds her way to her mother’s side
And sits beside her ready to retire
The period cramps had begun
It was painful but it had to be done
And with all the deviancy she would go through
Rasheek put her faith in her ‘taboo’.
